Frazetta, and...?

Postby jescas on Mon Feb 25, 2008 9:51 am

Howdy Gang,
Okay, we're all here because Frazetta is at the top, or near the top of our very short list of favorite fantasy artists. I'm wondering who you would place in the other top three spots on that list. You can put 'em down by order of preference or just generally.
Best,
Aaron

Just for fantasy All the Brandywine H.P and company) artist and most of the artist from the golden age of illustration. Alward too. J. allen I think in my opinion influenced frazetta along with Foster and Raymond.

Howdy Gang,
I guess my choices will come as no surprise.
Reed Crandall (who also did Edgar Rice Burroughs interiors, although I was never a big fan of his paintings)
And for some young turks:
Paul Bonner as a painter
and
Mark Schultz tied with Frank Cho for their gorgeous drawing skills.

Yeah, my list might change too, but I think there is some pretty heavy weight talent there as is. Also it shows my love for black and white art as well as paintings.

You know with Giger, if it weren't for Alien I might never have been attracted to his art. Certainly it's unique, but I can't say I really ever warmed up to his stuff. I can appreciate the skill but mostly his production art for Alien grabbed me.
Best,
Aaron

rick berry really doesn't get enough recognition, imo. i know he's loved by many but it seems like i never hear about him even though he's one of the busiest artists i know of.

i'd have to make another addition as well. kent williams. i know he's not really doing sf/f stuff anymore but damn is he one talented individual.

Rick you name a lot of the artist's I would have chosen especially the relatively unknown Zdenek Burian, Frank was a fan of his work, and you can see in the prehistoric landscapes and creatures and superb anatomy (veins and musculature) how Frank absorbed that influence.
I really like.
Jeff Jones
Barry Windsor Smith
Alan Lee
Henry Justice Ford
Gustav Klimt
and the list goes on.....

I'll keep mine to strictly Fantasy Art, because otherwise my list would run for pages. :D

Brom
Jeff Catherine Jones (who I hear likes to be called "CJ" now)
Michael Whelan

I will also second Scott's opinion that Rick Berry is very much under appreciated. IMHO, so is Jon Foster and John Jude Palencar.

Outside of Frazetta here are my top 4 currently (they change)

Simon Bisley was the first painter whose work knocked me over with his Batman/Judge Dredd GN. Slaine and various cover paintings. I have no idea what happened to his work over the years but that early work still knocks me out.
Marc Silvestri. I think this guy is the cat's meow. He has good drawing skills but like Frank also realizes his job is to entertain and so his art tends to have a lot of personality to it.
John Buscema. Very few people have anything on John when it comes to drawing the human figure. I'm talking about the largely unpublished work he did on the back of comic pages, very little of his published work truly captured the masters essence.
bill sienkiewicz is a genius

Some more Favs:
Mike Hoffman
Catherine Jones
MIke Mignola
Greg Capullo
Alex Raymond
Neal Adams
Jack Kirby
BWS
Richard Corben
Mark Schultz- Although I'm upset that he doesn't do comics anymore.
Sam Kieth
Al Williamson
whoever I forgot to mention
